Derik has been an active member of the labour movement for 20 years and has held various positions, including Canadian Director of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, and International Vice President of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW). Derik sits on the Board of Directors for a food bank and is an advisory board member for a hospital. He is also the founder of the Home for a Hero project, a community-based initiative that raised funds to build a home for a Canadian soldier wounded in Afghanistan. Derik holds a BA in Justice Studies and an MA in Interdisciplinary Studies. He enjoys activities with his family, obstacle racing and is an active member of the Canadian Forces Army Reserve.
